SIMON & SIMON - SEASON THREE

One of my favorite private eye shows of the Eighties, SIMON & SIMON, continues on DVD thanks to the fine folks at Shout! Factory, who picked up the license when Universal abandoned the series after releasing the first season some years ago.

The third season (from 1983-84) finds bickering brothers Rick (Gerald McRaney, Jericho) and A.J. (Jameson Parker, JAG) Simon still making a living as private eyes in San Diego, solving mysteries and saving damsels in distress through 22 episodes. This season also sees the introduction of Tim Reid (WKRP) as Detective "Downtown" Brown, their local police contact.

The show is pure Eighties escapism, with likeable leads, lots of action, attractive women with big hair, explosions and character comedy, all played out against sun-drenched Southern California settings. The mysteries are mostly featherweight, but it suits the show, which more than satisfies its mandate of providing an hour’s worth of light entertainment.

Shout! Factory presents SIMON & SIMON Season Three in full-frame transfers and stereo sound. The picture quality is as good as can be expected for a series of this vintage, and is actually pretty nice. There are no bonus features, but it does appear that all of the original music is intact. Shout! Factory has done another great job with this release.

I like the show, and if you’re a fan of 80’s escapist fare, you might, too.
