The Asylum, masters of the micro-budget mockbuster, steps away from the effects-laden sci-fi and fantasy knock-offs such as THE DAY THE EARTH STOPPED and TRANSMORPHERS with 18-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, a surprisingly engaging teen sex comedy.

Despite the title, this plays more as a distaff variation on flicks like AMERICAN PIE and SUPERBAD (both duly name-checked on the DVD case), with a young woman (pretty Olivia Alaina May) determined to lose her virginity at her graduation night party.

As written by Naomi Selfman and directed by Tamara Olson, VIRGIN is a raunchy but often charming farce, that treads some overly familiar ground in a slightly different way; specifically, from a female perspective. That alone makes the movie worth watching (unless you’re easily offended), as it gives the flick a unique quality.

Now, "quality" isn’t a word you’d generally apply to an Asylum release, but the acting is marginally better than their average, the production values are adequate (hey, it’s a teen party), and there’s the requisite amount of nudity and gross-out humor required from the genre. And, it’s got heart. If you’re a fan of raunchy teen comedies, there are a lot worse out there, mostly from the big studios.

The Asylum’s DVD presents the movie unrated in 1.85:1 widescreen, with 5.1 surround sound. Extras include a short making-of doc, a gag reel, and trailers for other Asylum releases.

My second qualified recommendation of a film from The Asylum. Now my taste is definitely going to be suspect! Still, I found this teen sex comedy to be a fun and entertaining 90 minutes, and you might, too. You might want to just rent it, though.
