I've previously admitted that I enjoy watching this ABC series with my wife. It's a fun spoof of soap operas, with some very talented comedic actors and it was entertaining while it lasted.

UGLY BETTY: THE COMPLETE FOURTH AND FINAL SEASON (2009-10) is now available on DVD, and if you're a fan of the show, you'll want to pick it up.

Betty Suarez (America Ferrera) has finally been promoted from assistant to the dim editor-in-chief, Daniel Meade (Eric Maibius, VOODOO MOON), to associate features editor at Mode magazine. Unfortunately, she has to work for her bitter, spoiled ex-boyfriend, and everyone else in the department resents her presence. Additionally, Daniel is having a hard time with the death of his wife, various factions are still fighting over the control of the company, and Betty's family has plenty of crises of their own.

Because the producers had ample warning that the series would not be picked up for a fifth season, they were able to devote the second half of year four to tidily wrapping up virtually every outstanding story thread, bringing character arcs to reasonable (in most cases) conclusions, and giving their lead the fairy tale ending that had been implicitly promised since the very first episode. Some of these resolutions seem a bit abrupt, but what the hell. The writing in Season 4 remains fairly sharp and funny, the cast is uniformly excellent (especially the still-luscious Vanessa Williams), and fans of the show should be quite satisfied.

ABC Studios' 4-disc set includes all 20 episodes of the fourth and final season, presented in1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Bonus features include an amusing featurette chronicling the season's Bahamas shoot, the fun MODE AFTER HOURS "webisodes," bloopers, and deleted scenes.

UGLY BETTY was a smart, funny show with heart, and probably should have lasted longer. Although it was based on a telenovela, the U.S. version had its own voice, and a remarkably strong and appealing lead in America Ferrera. Recommended.
